When you are going through a breakup distractions are vital. Keeping your mind busy is one of the only ways to stop thinking about your ex, obsessing over every detail of the breakup and playing it over and over in your mind. When I went through my breakups with Sam and Max I turned to three things. Friends, music, and books. While friends and music are fantastic, reading a book was one of the best ways for me to shut off my mind and escape the pain I was in. I have created a list of the 5 must-read books for anyone going through a breakup. They aren’t all breakup focused but they all inspiring and motivating. Trust me when I say these are a must read!
1. My Year With Eleanor by Noelle Hancock:
Bottom line, this book inspires you to face your fears. I’m not quite done reading it yet but following Noelle Hancock’s story has made me feel like I can overcome any fear I’ve ever had. On days when I’m feeling down I think back to this book and what she overcame and I remind myself that I can face whatever is in my way.
2. Yes Please by Amy Poehler:
If you need a good laugh, this is the book for you. Not only was it hysterical, it also has inspiring themes and motivational roots. I loved hearing about Amy’s start in the business and what she overcame to get to where she is today. It was hilarious and inspiring. Amy Poehler gave me a laugh when I needed it most.

3. The End of The Story by Lydia Davis:
Sometimes a breakup just makes absolutely no sense. If you are trying to understand why your breakup happened, put bits and pieces together, or look at all of the events in your past relationship this is the book you need to read.
4. A Place of Yes by Bethenny Frankel:
After a breakup there are definitely days when we all feel a bit lost. I have always been a fan of Bethenny and decided to dive into her book after my breakup with Max. This book inspired me to overcome every obstacle in my way. Sometimes we don’t know what is going to come next in life and ‘A Place of Yes’ made me feel like I will be able to get through anything that I may face in the future. It is fantastic for the healing process.
5. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert:
It is so important to remember that life is not over when you are going through a breakup. ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ chronicles a woman who went through a terrible time and despite it all found strength. I love this book because it made me realize that life can be even better after a breakup and we are all stronger than we think.
